There are a ton of hippie liberals who think sharing kombucha will save them when something vaguely bad happens (so they can be the YA protagonist and save the dystopia, obviously). But for a lot of us, shit already hit the fan. I’m in a group where we have a notification system for this one group of dudes in one percenter gear who keep roaming the city going into any business that looks ethnic or queer or generally progressive with 18 guns per guy to loiter and glower at people. We help out a lot of homeless people since some of us have been homeless (or are homeless) and our lib gardens can help with that. We distribute over-the-counter meds to people who can’t get access to them. We do narcan trainings. We hold little sewing days to fix clothes and stuff, but we also have firearm training. It’s about building an actual community that cares about each other that WON’T turn on each other when shit hits the fan, and making sure everyone is safe. I mean, look at the Panthers- shit HAD hit the fan for them, they could get murdered for existing, so they made a group about it. Ended up getting mass assassinated by the government despite their arsenals, but a noble civil rights fight nonetheless. They walked around neighborhoods armed as visual deterrents, but also held free lunches for schoolchildren who couldn’t afford lunch. (Black kids and white kids, just any kid who showed up looking for food and was brave enough to go somewhere guarded by spooky scary Negroes). We teach each other how to build shit. It really depends on whether you have Daniel, 25, who owns a raspberry pi, buys 9 dollar lattes, and still has his Harris/Biden sign up, or if you have a butch lesbian named Dave or something who would lay down her life for you and owns a bulldog, 3 guns, and a crochet collection. The difference between rich liberals and mutual aid leftists is that for a lot of us we aren’t prepping for a hypothetical, we’ve been living this shit even without a pandemic or fire. A pandemic or fire doesn’t help much, though, lmao.
