That meant that we were better able to manage with fewer descretionaries. But that reality is no longer the status quo, and even we Baby Boomers, who had the advantage of inexpensive energy, now have to reign in our discretionary depending like all the rest. Of course, that helps to contract the economy, and make it harder for all to manage to meet their basic needs.

Inflation at that time was about 18%. It was a very difficult time for many, but they survived by slashing their discretionary spending, and focused on paying for necessities. People now complain about inflation being so high at a real rate of 9%. Stop complaining, and live within your means. Many people go into increasing debt to continue a lifestyle they can no longer afford. If that is you, then I suspect you are out of touch with economic reality.
