I\u2019m a big proponent of the second amendment, but I\u2019m also a realist and understand the realities of self-defense. Unfortunately, many gun owners that I talk to have never even taken a single self-defense course, but still insist they’ll be able to stop an attack because they\u2019re \u201carmed\u201d.<\/p>\n
I hate to break it to you; carrying a firearm does not guarantee your safety, and carrying a firearm without training is a recipe for disaster.<\/strong><\/p>\n Carrying a firearm definitely levels the playing field during certain circumstances, but the reality of self-defense and real-world attacks is that there are certain situations where you\u2019re firearm is not going to be able to prevent an attack, especially if you haven\u2019t trained in real-world self-defense tactics.<\/p>\n In close quarters combat, the chances of being able to unholster your firearm and return fire on an attacker are actually pretty slim. To be truly prepared you need to be able to take out an attacker, or at least slow them down so you\u2019re able to access your firearm before they can carry out the attack.<\/p>\n And for those who think they’ve trained because they hit the range everyone in a while: THINK AGAIN.<\/strong><\/p>\n Trust me there\u2019s a reason law enforcement officers and members of the military train in hand-to-hand combat; they know from experience, and years of scientific studies, that their firearms are of little use when confronted with a close quarters attack. In fact, I want you to check out this video from the early 80\u2019s of Martial Arts Instructor Dan Inosanto training with law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n In the video, he shows how quickly small distances can be covered, and how there’s no way anyone can realistically draw their firearm during these types of surprise attacks.<\/p>\n
