Of course, the obvious options include security systems and monitoring systems that automatically alert authorities if your home is in danger. These work great for the present. However, it\u2019s important to consider how to protect your home personally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if a natural disaster cuts off communication or these systems simply give out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is exactly what we are going to look at\nhere: measures that you can take personally to protect your own home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Security Cameras<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We already noted that there is a certain level\nof risk to depending entirely on a security system but buying or creating one\nmight be a good place to start. In the vein of protecting your own home, you\u2019re\ngoing to want something that you can monitor. We\u2019ve seen more and more of this\nlately: so-called \u201cnanny cams\u201d for children\u2019s rooms, doorbell cameras, pet\ncameras, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a more DIY option, there are apps like\nCamio that you can use to turn an old cellphone into a security camera. These\nare systems that you can control and use to monitor your property. Even if\nyou\u2019re opting for one that may not be able to alert authorities in an extreme\nsituation, it\u2019s still helpful to be notified if someone like a burglar is\ncoming close to your house. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Floodlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting away from the more high-tech options, an option that became popular years ago is a simple light. Someone breaking into your home doesn\u2019t want to be recognized or caught. With automatic floodlights, you\u2019re likely to see an intruder turn tail and run from the bright yard. First, it\u2019s something you\u2019ve probably heard\nyour whole life: children don\u2019t answer the door. Children, no matter how well\nthey\u2019re taught, don\u2019t have the same skills to assess a threat than an adult\ndoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, never open the door all the way. If\nyou throw the door wide open, it\u2019s much easier for an intruder to get in.\nYou\u2019ll also want to be careful not to let anyone into your home if you don\u2019t\nknow them. From peddling salesmen to a neighbor from a street over you\u2019ve never\nmet, it\u2019s better safe than sorry here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get a Deadbolt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This point is short and sweet but also\ncrucial. Poorly constructed or weak locks can be jimmied or even just broken. A\ndeadbolt offers a stronger lock that\u2019s hard to get past. A door brace can also\nprotect against someone trying to bust in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep Gardens Trimmed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This might seem like a home decor point rather\nthan safety point but it comes back to visibility once again. Overgrown shrubs\nor plants can make it easier for an intruder to get in undetected because\nthey\u2019re harder to see both from the inside and outside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make Close Relationships With\nNeighbors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Neighborhood watches are often scoffed at but\nclose communities can actually reduce crime. When everyone knows each other,\nthey\u2019re going to recognize an unfamiliar face. They\u2019re also more likely to\nintervene or call for help when they see suspicious activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a similar note, take a look at the security\nmeasures of the house around and ask what others do. The last thing you want is\nto be the house on the block that seems like the easiest target. Keep up with\nyour neighbors\u2019 measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Invest in Thick Curtains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Intruders typically break into houses because\nthey know they\u2019ll get something out of it. If they can glance in your window\nand see a flat screen TV on your wall or luxury items on your dresser, that\u2019s a\nrisk. The solution to this can be simple: get thick curtains that potential\nburglars won\u2019t be able to see through. It\u2019s also a good idea to put any small\nvaluables away such as watches or jewelry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install a Security Fence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to stop an intruder is to make\nsure they can\u2019t get close to the house at all. Make sure your security fence is\nstrong too. Most people choose a tall, solid fence because they\u2019re both secure\nand attractive. You\u2019ll want to be wary of anything that can be easily climbed\nsuch as chain link fencing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Leave Signs That You Aren\u2019t\nHome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a house looks vulnerable, it usually is and\nthose with ill-will know that. If you advertise that you\u2019re out of town or let\nmail pile up, your absence might be taken advantages of. Having a close friend\nthat you trust to collect your mail is a good idea. It\u2019s also crucial to be\ncareful of who you let into your home. It\u2019s better to ask a family member to\nstop by and water your plants rather than hiring someone you just met down the\nstreet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last thing any homeowner wants is to experience is feeling unsafe in their own home.
