Wintertime can be one of the worst times to experience a breakdown, especially if you\u2019re out in the middle of nowhere. The first step to surviving out in the cold, is of course prevention. That’s why it is so important to make sure your vehicle is ready for whatever nature has in store for you<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hypothermia<\/a> is a medical emergency that should not be taken lightly. Hypothermia happens when your body starts to lose heat faster than it can produce it, causing your body’s core temperature to drop to the point where the normal function is impaired. If you do find yourself stuck in a winter storm, with no immediate chances for help, knowing how to get warm if your car gets stranded in a winter storm is extremely important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tips you should know, before heading out in the winter.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Snow can keep you warm<\/strong> \u2013 Although it may seem strange, snow is an excellent insulator. If there is enough snow in the area, you can bury your vehicle to help keep winter winds from stealing your vehicle’s trapped heat. Just make sure you create an airway for fresh air and keep one of the doors free enough to get out. You will also want to create a way of signaling rescuers if your vehicle is hidden by snow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Block off unused space<\/strong>. Use anything at your disposal to block off any space in your vehicle that’s not being used. Blankets, leaves, and any materials that you can find should be shoved into any areas where heat can be lost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Run Your vehicle for 10 minutes every hour<\/strong> \u2013 Make sure to keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow or debris. Poison gases can enter into your car if the pipe is clogged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Bundle Up<\/strong> \u2013 Keep extra dry clothes, warm blankets, a sleeping bag, gloves, hats, and winter socks in your vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Never leave without a winter survival kit<\/strong>. \u2013 Being prepared is always the best course of action. Create a kit that can be stored in your trunk. The kit should contain warm clothes, tea light candles (for warmth), flares, tools, chains, Fix a Flat, and other winter survival tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Huddle together<\/strong>. Huddling together in a small space can increase the amount of heat in that area. Remember to block off any space that’s not being used, then huddle closely together to generate more body heat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Don’t forget to move<\/strong> \u2013 Move your arms, hands, legs, feet and toes to improve your circulation and to keep warm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Make sure you know how to start a fire<\/a><\/strong>! If things go really bad, and you end up stuck far from help, you want to make sure you have the skills it takes to survive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
