For decades the media has repeated the same number like it\u2019s gospel: The national debt number!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s headline: \u201cThe national debt is about $39 trillion.\u201d<\/strong> But is it really? Or are they all hiding the fact that this is all one giant fuckling ponzi scheme?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Truth is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the number on the Treasury clock.
That\u2019s the number politicians argue about.
That\u2019s the number the financial media pretends is the full story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even establishment economists are starting to admit something most Americans were never meant to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That number is a fantasy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a recent interview with Fortune<\/em>, University of Pennsylvania economist Kent Smetters<\/strong>, who directs the Penn Wharton Budget Model, said the real debt picture looks very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we call implicit obligations are twice the size of explicit obligations,\u201d Smetters said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Those implicit obligations are the promises buried inside programs like Social Security and Medicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you count them, he argues, the real number is not $39 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s closer to $100 trillion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s coming from someone inside the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Official Debt Is Only the Tip of the Iceberg<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The number politicians like to cite \u2014 roughly $39 trillion<\/strong> \u2014 is what economists call explicit debt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the money the federal government has legally borrowed through Treasury bonds and bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the government has made massive promises it hasn\u2019t funded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are called unfunded liabilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They include things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Social Security benefits
\u2022 Medicare
\u2022 Veterans benefits
\u2022 Federal pensions
\u2022 Government healthcare commitments<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These programs promise trillions in future payments with no money set aside to pay for them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Treasury\u2019s own Financial Report of the United States Government<\/strong>, the 75-year unfunded shortfall is already over $73 trillion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that estimate only looks 75 years out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stretch the timeline further \u2014 which economists often do when measuring long-term obligations \u2014 and many fiscal analysts place the real number well above:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$200 trillion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, the $100 trillion estimate being discussed now may still be conservative. Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff<\/strong>, a former advisor to the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department, has spent decades studying what he calls fiscal gap accounting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His conclusion is far more alarming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kotlikoff has estimated the true long-term fiscal gap of the United States at roughly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$220 trillion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That figure represents the present value difference between all future government spending promises and expected revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kotlikoff has been blunt about what that means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe U.S. is bankrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

His argument is simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When governments make promises they cannot fund, those promises are still real liabilities \u2014 even if politicians choose not to count them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government\u2019s Accounting Rules Were Designed to Hide It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Smetters says the real problem isn\u2019t just the size of the debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the way Washington hides it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal accounting rules treat future entitlement promises differently from borrowed money. Politicians can promise trillions in benefits decades into the future, and those obligations never appear on the official debt ledger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Smetters explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey reduced these explicit liabilities, but it actually increased implicit liabilities by even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The result is a massive accounting trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politicians shift obligations from the column the public sees to the column that stays hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smetters calls it a \u201cshell game.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let\u2019s be honest about what it actually is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a Ponzi system run by the government.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social Security Is the Center of the House of Cards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Social Security operates on what\u2019s called a pay-as-you-go system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means the money coming out today is funded by workers paying into the system today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was designed in the 1930s when there were over 40 workers supporting every retiree<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today there are about 2.8 workers per retiree<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that number keeps dropping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Social Security trust fund is now projected to be depleted around 2032<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point, by law, benefits would automatically drop to about 84% of promised payments<\/strong> unless Congress intervenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politicians know this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also know voters would revolt if they admitted how broken the system really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So they kick the can down the road and hope someone else deals with the fallout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most \u201cRich People\u201d Aren\u2019t Rich the Way You Think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s another piece of the puzzle most Americans never understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wealthy operate under an entirely different financial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Average people live off income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They work.
They earn money.
They pay taxes on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wealthy live off debt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of selling assets and paying taxes, they borrow against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stocks.
Real estate.
Businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Banks lend them money using those assets as collateral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That borrowed money is often tax-free<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So while the average American is taxed on every dollar earned, the ultra-wealthy can live for decades spending borrowed money while their assets continue growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a completely different set of rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s the same system the federal government is using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borrow forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hope growth outruns the debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pretend the bill will never come due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Debt Bomb Has Already Been Triggered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last year we wrote about this when the national debt crossed $36 trillion<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it\u2019s approaching $39 trillion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That increase happened in barely a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back then the numbers looked like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 $108,000 of federal debt per person
\u2022 $273,000 per household
\u2022 $4.8 billion added to the debt every single day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those numbers have only gotten worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again \u2014 that\u2019s before counting the true liabilities<\/strong> buried in entitlement programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AI Tsunami: When Job Loss Collides With a Debt System Already on the Edge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While Washington is pretending the debt crisis is manageable, another force is quietly building that could make the entire situation far worse: artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new wave of AI isn\u2019t just about writing emails or summarizing documents. What\u2019s emerging now is agentic AI<\/strong> \u2014 systems that can take a goal, break it into steps, use tools, test results, and keep iterating until the job is done. In other words, we\u2019re moving from simple automation to full task replacement<\/strong> across large parts of white-collar work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The layoffs have already begun<\/a>. The outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that 54,836 job cuts in 2025 were directly tied to AI<\/strong>, with more already appearing in early 2026. Even global leaders are warning about the speed of the shift. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva<\/strong> recently warned that AI is hitting the labor market \u201clike a tsunami.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now combine that with the debt problem we just discussed. Programs like Social Security and Medicare depend on millions of workers paying taxes into the system. But if AI replaces large portions of the workforce, that tax base shrinks right when government spending is exploding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the people building these systems aren\u2019t exactly hiding where they want this to go. At the BlackRock Infrastructure Summit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman<\/strong> openly described a future where \u201cintelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about that for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Machines trained on humanity\u2019s knowledge\u2026 replacing human workers\u2026 while the companies running those systems charge people for access to \u201cintelligence\u201d itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currency devaluation
Runaway inflation
Bank failures
Supply chain disruptions
Food shortages
Civil unrest
Government overreach<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the financial system cracks, the effects spread far beyond Wall Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your grocery store doesn\u2019t keep months of food in the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who assumes the system will keep functioning the way it always has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History shows what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argentina
Venezuela
Lebanon
Sri Lanka<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each collapse looked impossible right up until the moment it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
